The Heart of the Royal Oak is the modern interpretation of the Restoration Room at the Audemars Piguet manufacture in Le Brassus in the Swiss Vallée de Joux. Take a deep dive into the Royal Oak’s DNA, heritage, savoir-faire, and evolution to the 2022 novelties down to the finest watchmaking craftsmanship.
Check out the “Iconoclast” (original Royal Oak Ref. 5402 created in 1972 from the Audemars Piguet Heritage collection) and the “Icon” ( the latest Ref. 16202 – the “50th Anniversary” model produced in 2022) in the centre showcase. This display pays tribute to the past while looking forward to the future.
Stop by the watchmaker’s bench focusing on Audemars Piguet’s human talents and connections. See how the watchmaker demonstrates the exacting high standards of securing the Royal Oak’s octagonal bezel to the case with the eight hexagonal screws through the caseback.
Now get up close with the Royal Oak collection from 1972 to 2022. On the right side of the room are 18 timepieces from the “Heritage Kits and Collectors’ Watches” collection, starting with the 3 historical versions of the 39mm 5402 model produced in 1973, 1974 and 1976 from private collections.
“Icon” features 4 Royal Oaks produced between 1977 and 2005, while “A Limitless Playground” presents 11 Royal Oaks produced in different materials, sizes, and finishes between 1986 to 2021 that showcase the talents of the craftspeople who turn the Royal Oak into a limitless playground. Some came from private collections.
Delve deeper into these heritage watches with fascinating archival materials that bring the past to life, evoking a sense of character and how Audemars Piguet chose to portray the Royal Oak at the time. View historical advertisements, sketches, photographs, tools and watch parts displayed on boards and inside drawers showing the watches’ history and stories.
Now return to the present with the 2022 novelties displayed on the left. Although retaining the general aesthetics codes of the original Royal Oak model from 1972, the latest references present a subtle evolution in terms of the case, bracelet and dial design.

For 150 years, our story has been rooted in Le Brassus, a small village that went on to do rather big things. Here, in the Vallée de Joux, also known as the cradle of Haute Horlogerie, the synergy between people, nature, and time gave birth to a passion and savoir-faire passed down from generation to generation.
