Astronomy

The masterwatchmakers at Audemars Piguet expertly conquer the vastness of the sky and recreate it in watch modules no more than a few centimetres wide.

Perpetual Calendar

The perpetual calendar houses a mechanical memory that maps time cycles of 48 months and hence automatically factors in the months that have 30 or 31 days, while also adjusting for the number of days in February, whether 28 or 29. This highly sophisticated and complex mechanism will not require any adjustment until 2100 and 2200 as, contrary to convention, these are not leap years.

1

Lunation

A cycle lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, 2.8 seconds.

374

Parts

The number of parts in the 5134 movement.

2100

Adjusting

The Perpetual Calender will not require any adjusting up to year 2100.

The new geometry of time

Moon Phase

The astronomical moon phase indication provides an opportunity to admire the waxing and waning phases of the earth's satellite. The watch will continue running without any need for further adjustment for 122 years and 44 days.

Equation of Time

The lapse of time between two consecutive passages of the sun through the meridian in a given place does not have the same length throughout the year. It actually lasts 24 hours only four times a year. The rest of the year, it is sometimes longer and sometimes shorter. According to the longitude and latitude of the place determined by the owner, the equation of time represents the difference between mean solar time and real solar time.

Sunset & Sunrise

Calibre 2120/2808 is the world's first watch movement to indicate sunrise and sunset times taking into account both longitude and latitude. It is calibrated according to the place determined by its owner. The sunrise and sunset times are effective at sea level and correspond to the universal concept of winter time.

Dual Time

In 1989, Audemars Piguet created the first Dual Time wristwatch to display the time in a second time zone driven by a single selfwinding movement calibre 2229/2845.

Day & Date

The simplest complication on a watch is the date display. Day & Date adds the day of the week to the date complication.

Time Keeping

It is a feat of horological mastery to be able to tell the exact time to within one-fifth of a second; to strike the hour, quarter hour and minute on demand; to display the position of the stars, and to supply the correct date with no need for adjustment in the coming century or two-all in the space of a tiny case that houses an even tinier mechanism.
