Capturing the brand’s timeless beauty in horological mastery, precise engineering and exquisite design, the photography exhibition features 20 original photographs created by talented young students from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong (SCAD) and the Beijing Film Academy in China. Mr. Carsten Schael and Mr. Yu Yuntian, two acclaimed photography masters who are frontrunners of today’s image making also committed one photograph each to the exhibition, who drew their inspirations by honouring creativity and artistic integrity of Audemars Piguet watches while uniting artistic talents of photography and functional aesthetics of the Jules Audemars timepieces. Along with the 22 photographs, the new Jules Audemars collection will be unveiled at The Art of Timeless Precision photography exhibition open to public at Ocean Terminal Lobby, Harbour City in Hong Kong from October 5 to 9, 2011 and Shin Kong Place in Beijing from October 14 to 23, 2011.
“We are excited to unveil the much anticipated new Jules Audemars collections under the theme The Art of Timeless Precision,” Mr. David von Gunten, CEO of Audemars Piguet Hong Kong and Mainland China commented during the press conference. “Over the years, Audemars Piguet has consistently cultivated its history, pursuing ever more advanced technical and aesthetic challenges while never losing sight of the traditional values. The new Jules Audemars collection is an eloquent tribute to this time-honoured philosophy, and The Art of Timeless Precision perfectly expresses the unique synergy the collection shares with photography – timelessness and precision.”
During the award ceremony at the press conference, Mr. David von Gunten congratulated Mr. Skene Milne, the young winner of The Timeless Art of Precision photography competition in Hong Kong, who is a student from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Hong Kong, the winner of the same competition in China, a student from the Beijing Film Academy, is Mr. Wei Chen. “We are pleased to congratulate Skene Milne, whose artwork “The Horae” and Wei Chen, whose artwork “The Wilderness", honoured the aesthetics of the Jules Audemars timepieces and to whom the artistic creativity of Audemars Piguet watches was the inspiration. Taking the opportunity, I would like to thank our partner Shriro who generously provided the professional Hasselblad cameras for students from SCAD in Hong Kong and the Beijing Film Academy to participate in the photography competition.” The prizes for the two winners will be a trip to the Audemars Piguet Manufacture in Le Brassus, Switzerland where they could apply their photography skills to capture images of the splendid landscape in Vallée de Joux, the watchmaking cradle of Switzerland. Winning photos were selected by a judging panel of four parties: Audemars Piguet Chief Artistic Officer, Mr. Octavio Garcia, Shriro Hong Kong Ltd Managing Director, Mr. Egon Heldner, master photographers Mr. Carsten Schael and Mr. Yu Yuntian from Hong Kong and Beijing respectively.
As for why Audemars Piguet decided to associate the Jules Audemars collection launch under the theme The Art of Timeless Precision, Mr. von Gunten stated, “We believe the new Jules Audemars collection is best represented as being timeless and precise. Its design has combined over 136 years of watchmaking craftsmanship and definite precision in mastering each component, while the dedication of Audemars Piguet is timeless as the watchmaking craftsmanship has been passed on from the founders over a century ago, to each and every generation.” As for the inspiration behind this idea, Mr. von Gunten replied, “The same qualities of timelessness and precision could be found in other fields of art, such as photography. Capturing a scene requires the photographer to display complex techniques and precision because all the angles, lighting and mood have to be in harmony. With these shared values, we decided to create this photography competition under the theme The Art of Timeless Precision. In addition, the motivation to inspire the younger generation is the driving force behind our collaboration with students from SCAD and the Beijing Film Academy in order to provide them a valuable opportunity.”
Mr. Octavio Garcia, Chief Artistic Officer of Audemars Piguet who flew in from Switzerland especially to attend this event, excitingly shared his insights on the new Jules Audemars watch collection. “Generations of Audemars Piguet master-watchmakers display expertise and passionately dedicated artistry in combining beauty with technologies of complex and precise movements. The resulting aesthetic appeal goes well beyond outward appearance and influences every aspect of the intricate inner workings of a watch,” Mr. Garcia explained. “As with all the best works of art, each watch offers a wealth of original surprises and is borne of a creative spark that the French aptly called a ‘grain de folie’ – a unique touch that makes it a genuinely innovative, timeless and intensely personal masterpiece.”
Mr. Egon Heldner, Managing Director of Shriro Hong Kong, the exclusive distributor of Hasselblad Asia for over 50 years, also expressed his excitement as a partner of the photography exhibition. “Whilst Audemars Piguet centre staged their latest achievements in precision watchmaking, Hasselblad put the finest photographic tools in the hands of ambitious art students and experienced professionals who guided them. This was a wonderful symbiosis of creative excellence across disciplines and generations.”
The photography exhibition will be concluded with an exclusive gala party on October 7, 2011 in an elegant atmosphere at Cucina, Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel where the new Jules Audemars collection and The Art of Timeless Precision photography exhibition will unveil to guests. To honour artistry of precise movement in the new collection, the exhibition presents visitors an interactive visiting experience by stylistically showcasing the new timepieces while meticulously hanging the photographs with wires via complicated angles, symbolizing the human hand as a living extension of the high-precision tools required to achieve perfect command of time measurement, as well as hinting the complication of watchmaking in the latest Jules Audemars collection.
Through this exhibition, the latest collection of timepieces recounts the legacy of the brand that bears the name of one of its founders, Jules Audemars, in a perfect expression of the brand’s watchmaking heritage that puts a new spin on classic ideas. Along with the photographs, the six new Jules Audemars collections: Jules Audemars Large Date Tourbillon, Jules Audemars Moon-phase Calendar, Jules Audemars Dual Time, Jules Audemars Extra-thin, Jules Audemars Selfwinding and Ladies’ Jules Audemars Small Seconds will be on display at “The Art of Timeless Precision” photography exhibition located at Ocean Terminal Lobby, Harbour City in Hong Kong from October 5 to 9, 2011 and Shin Kong Place in Beijing from October 14 to 23, 2011.
