Leveraging 136 years of luxury watchmaking and craftsmanship, Audemars Piguet’s Jules Audemars collection represents the brand’s masterpiece in horology – a creation of art that is coveted by watch and art lovers the world over. To celebrate the launch of the Jules Audemars 2011 collection, Audemars Piguet honours creativity and artistic integrity in the region by spearheading a photography competition and subsequent exhibition in Hong Kong and Beijing. The theme of the event, “The Art of Timeless Precision” captures the timeless beauty of horological mastery, its precision engineering and distinctive design. Through this photography competition, Audemars Piguet has demonstrated a strong commitment to educate the next generation by providing a platform for students while at the same time encouraging them to use their strengths and abilities to transform their ideas into masterpieces.
Mr. David von Gunten, CEO of Audemars Piguet Hong Kong and Mainland China shares his view on the exhibition, “We are very excited about this exhibition as we are incorporating the art of photography with the art of watchmaking – both of which requires a discerning level of mastery before they are considered true arts in themselves. The theme “The Art of Timeless Precision” perfectly expresses the unique synergy that the Jules Audemars collection shares with photography – timelessness and precision.”
The project is supported by high-end Swedish professional camera maker, Hasselblad, who will provide their professional cameras to students from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong (SCAD Hong Kong) and the Beijing Film Academy in Beijing, who will be participating in the photography competition. Mr. Carsten Schael and Mr. Yu Yuntian, the two renowned photography masters who are frontrunners of today’s image making will commit one photograph each to the exhibition, drawing their inspirations from Audemars Piguet to unite the artistic talents of photography and functional aesthetics of the Jules Audemars timepiece. Furthermore, the two master photographers have conducted workshops at the two art schools to share their professional insights and valuable advice with the students to aid them in the competition.
The competition’s judging panel will include four parties: Audemars Piguet Chief Artistic Officer, Mr. Octavio Garcia, Managing Director of Shriro Hong Kong Ltd., Mr. Egon Heldner, master photographers Mr. Carsten Schael and Mr. Yu Yuntian from Hong Kong and Beijing respectively. Ten photographs from each school will be selected as finalists, and presented in exhibitions held in both Hong Kong and Beijing. Subsequently, two grand winners, one from Hong Kong and one from China, will be given an opportunity to visit the Audemars Piguet Manufacture in Le Brassus and apply their photography skills to capture a sequence of images of the splendid landscape in Vallée de Joux, the watchmaking cradle of Switzerland.
Along with the photographs, the new Jules Audemars collection will be unveiled at the exhibition. The photography exhibition will exude artistic elegance that will not only highlight Audemars Piguet’s undying commitment to art, craftsmanship and horology, but also to their social commitment to promoting art and design talent in the region.
